Google Published Recommendations for Building Smartphone-Optimized Websites
Filed under: Elsewhere
Google today published recommendations for building smartphone-optimized websites and it encourages web designers and developers to take responsive web design technique as main recommendation.
Their recommendations on smartphone-optmized website strategies are:
- Sites that use responsive web design, i.e. sites that serve all devices on the same set of URLs, with each URL serving the same HTML to all devices and using just CSS to change how the page is rendered on the device. This is Google’s recommended configuration.
- Sites that dynamically serve all devices on the same set of URLs, but each URL serves different HTML (and CSS) depending on whether the user agent is a desktop or a mobile device.
- Sites that have a separate mobile and desktop sites.
Also notes that if responsive design isn't a best option for, you can serve different content/HTML on same URL but should be setup dynamically so appropriate content can be delivered to appropriate devices.
So if you want to have your sites (desktop and mobile) be indexed by Google, I highly recommend to follow their setup recommendations. You can read more about the details here.
